Star Anise originates from the Illicium verum tree which is native to China and Vietnam. Ground star anise seed is ground from the seed within the eight points of whole star anise.

Star Anise, both whole and ground, is commonly used in Asian cuisines, particularly Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian. You'll find it in sweet and savory dishes including soups, stews, stir fry, marinades and desserts.

Be sure to read our blog: Understanding Spices - Anise & Star Anise. Here are more ways to use Ground Star Anise Seed:

Baking: Add ground star anise to baked goods like cookies, cakes, and muffins for a subtle licorice flavor. It pairs well with ingredients like chocolate, citrus, and nuts.

Curries and Stews: Ground star anise can enhance the flavor of rich, savory dishes like curries, stews and braises. It adds depth and complexity to the spice blend.

Marinades: Use ground star anise in marinades for meats like pork, chicken, or duck. It adds a unique flavor dimension and helps tenderize the meat.

Robert ★★★★★

The aroma is incredibly warm and complex—a little goes a long way in my pho broth. The grind is consistent without any powdery dust settling at the bottom.

Samuel ★★★★★

The fine grind really lets the star anise flavor bloom evenly in my slow-cooked pho broth. I love that it’s pure seed, without any filler or stems—makes a noticeable difference in the depth.

John D. ★★★★★

I baked a batch of gingerbread cookies this weekend and that warm, licorice-like depth from the ground seed really carried through. The powder is fine and even, so it dissolves nicely into the dough without any gritty bits.
